WA8UNS New York City Marathon NYC Marathon Amateur Radio Ham Radio Communications Team Mile Marker 24

It was an honor and a privilege to be a member of this NYC Marathon Amateur Radio Ham Radio Communications Team Mile Marker 24. And the excellent group to serve with for mile 24 marker., I hope to be able to come back next year., but maybe I'll also try to be in the race for 2010., But being able to give back as a volunteer for a sport of marathon in which I have been doing since age 16 is a great honor., To see my sports blog please click HERE

A special thank you to W2ML Radio Communications Director 2009 ING New York City Marathon for allowing me to take part as a volunteer for this race.,

I was able to learn about Amateur Radio Ham Radio Communications in the NYC Marathon when W2ML visited PEARL K2PUT.

Seeing all the faces and expressions of each runner that had passed by me., It was great to see everyone in there effort to do there best in this race.,I was emotional and proud of each person that came and competed in the Disabilites handicap part of the race and the great effort and challanges it takes to compete in this type of race., My hat goes off to you.,And also the medical team that help me at the end of the race when I got something in my eyes for helping to flush them out., Many thanks and my team members.,

A few pictures ( better save up for a good digital camera next time )

It was along day for me but worth it all., took the 5:28 am train into the city from Goldens Bridge, New York and then took the 5:45 train home back to Goldens Bridge, New York.

I would like to thank my girlfriend Diane for taking me to and from the train and also to ham radio amateur radio freind W1QH for helping in the programing of the radio and also K2ZZ Radio Oasis for what I needed for my radio. And N1SXL,K1CTT,AB1GL and KA1WPM for trying to help me via email and phone with the programing as well., And KJ6HI from Kenwood Amateur Radio Customer Support who I had spent sometime with trying to figure out the software programming and why it wasn't working for me., Still need to figure out why I can't label the channels still., I Had to do alot manually for putting in the Frequencies needed for this race.,I had gotten a little frustrated by it all but got it to work for what I needed.,

And the support of the CT ARES ( Amateur Radio Emergency Service ) TEAM

Sorry to say my APRS wasn't working that day for WA8UNS-15., Not sure what happen to my gear.,

Other pictures taken from the Mile Mark 24 Area that we sereved.,

And one final note :

I'm Very proud of my sister who finished a little after 4 hours., Mom of two and has diabetes and member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation JDRF. I commend her in her training for this race and her hard work and effort.,

Amateur Radio Ham Radio involvement with Radiological Decontamination Drill Exercises

I present this as a learning tool and what I have found intresting in a learning aid for Decontamination Drill Exercises. I have been invloved with a New York State Amateur Radio Club that helps out with Amateur Radio for Radiological Decontamination Drill Exercises. That gets Evaluated by Entergy and The New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) as well as FEMA. The learning aid tool that I have found is a Emergency Training Dirty Bomb! After the Blast (Online Simulation) Which I have found this to be a excellent tool as we set up a Decontamination center like the one in this Online Simulation at a local school as part of our training.,We also do Field Team Monitoring. As Field Team Monitoring goes out with the following equipment., Eberline RO-20 ionization chamber OR Eberline RO-20A ionization chamber, Eberline RM-14 Count Rate Meter, and Radeco H-809C Air Sampler, and simulate wearing Anti-Contamination clothing. where able to see and track the locations of our teams with APRS Automatic Packet Reporting System at our EOC emergency operations center. We also have our Radiological Emergency Responce Plan for our area.

Here are two pictures of what this Online Simulation and information about this free online course which anyone can take. There are three missions of this.,
Mission 1: Dirty Bomb Decontamination
Mission 2: Mass Fatalities Operational Sites
Mission 3: Community Assistance Center
